Ice Maker Troubleshooting: What to Check First

Before you call for a repair, a few quick checks can sometimes solve the problem yourself, or at least help you describe it clearly.

Ice maker tray filled with ice cubes

An ice maker that suddenly stops working is one of the more common calls we get, but not every case needs a technician right away. Here are the checks worth trying first.

1

Check the Water Supply Line

Make sure the water line behind the refrigerator is not kinked or frozen. A frozen supply line is a common cause of "no ice" complaints, especially after a power outage.

2

Confirm the Ice Maker Is Turned On

Many ice makers have a physical switch or an on-screen setting that can be accidentally turned off, especially after cleaning the freezer.

3

Check the Freezer Temperature

Ice makers need the freezer at 0°F or below to work properly. If the freezer is running warm, the ice maker may not produce ice even though everything else is working.

4

Look for a Jammed Ice Tray

Sometimes ice cubes clump together and jam the ejector arm. Carefully clearing the tray can sometimes resolve the issue without any parts replacement.

5

Check the Water Filter

An old or clogged water filter can restrict flow enough to slow or stop ice production. Most filters need replacement every 6 months.

If these checks don't solve it, our technicians repair ice makers of every major brand.

When to Skip the Troubleshooting

If you hear the ice maker running but nothing happens, or if water is leaking from the unit, these usually point to a part that needs replacing, like the water inlet valve. In these cases, it is faster to call a technician directly.

The Bottom Line

A few quick checks solve more ice maker problems than you might expect. When they don't, describing what you tried helps your technician diagnose the issue faster on the visit.
